New Hopes, New Challenges
January 20, 2009 at 5:30 pm by Emma RoderickThis morning, hundreds of millions of people gathered across the world to watch as Barack Obama became the 44th President of the United States.
His inaugural speech spoke to many of the challenges facing our country today, but what struck us most were the following lines:
As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our Founding Fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience’s sake.
We know that it takes more than a speech to change seven years of failed “war on terror” policies which have severely compromised our most basic civil liberties. But Obama’s words are powerful, and together we must work to hold Obama accountable to them–to ensure that he will, as he swore he would today, uphold the Constitution of the United States of America.
How do you plan to hold Obama accountable over the next four years? Comment or email to let us know.
