ctnglueBORDC director, Shahid Buttar, will be part of a panel “NSA Surveillance and Our ‘Almost’ Orwellian State,” tonight in Berkeley, California. The discussion will address domestic dragnet surveillance, the threat it poses to the future of civil liberties, and democracy at large.

The panel is composed of a formidable cast of advocates including:

  • Daniel Ellsberg, the iconic whistleblower and national hero described by President Nixon as “the most dangerous man in America
  • Cindy Cohn, Legal Director and General Counsel to the Electronic Frontier Foundation
  • Norman Solomon, Journalist, co-founder of RootsAction.org, founding director of Institute for Public Accuracy, and author of War Made Easy.
  • Moderator Robert Jaffee, a volunteer attorney on the Hedges v. Obama case challenging indefinite detention without trial.

Cindy will provide an update on the legal challenges to NSA spying, while Norman will share his analysis of mass media coverage of the NSA controversy. Daniel will address the role and history of whistleblowers and the institutions they confront, while I’ll focus on grassroots action opportunities at the state level, including the “Shame on Feinstein” initiative calling for Senator Feinstein’s resignation as chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, and the bi-partisan “Off Now” policy proposed in Sacramento to cut off the NSA from state resources. We expect a packed house and a lively discussion. If you can make it, RSVP and come out tonight!

The event will be live streamed by KPFA 94.1 (FM).
