Celebrate Constitution Day with students in your community

Constitution Day is just around the corner!  Each year on September 17, all schools receiving federal funding are required to mark Constitution Day by integrating the Constitution into their lessons.

Yesterday, BORDC’s educators team asked educators across the country to plan Constitution Day lessons on the Constitution for their own classrooms and to invite BORDC volunteers into their schools to give guest presentations to mark Constitution Day.

If you are an educator, here’s what you can do to celebrate Constitution Day:

  • Teach a lesson on the Constitution on September 17.  BORDC has provided lesson plans and other resources you can use.
  • Invite a BORDC volunteer into your classroom to give a Constitution Day presentation.  Email me with your school’s zip code and a phone number where I can reach you and I’ll connect you with a BORDC volunteer.
  • Join BORDC’s educators team and help compile lesson plans or other curricular materials about current constitutional issues.  Email me to get started.
  • Tell your colleagues about this opportunity. Share this blog post with other educators, both in your school and in other schools, and encourage them to plan Constitution Day lessons or invite guest presenters to their classrooms.

If you aren’t an educator but would like to get involved with Constitution Day, here’s what you can do:

  • Volunteer to give a Constitution Day guest presentation at a local school. Contact me for guidance and to find out whether a school near you has asked for a BORDC volunteer for Constitution Day.
  • Spread the word about Constitution Day. If you know other educators or potential Constitution Day volunteers, share this blog post with them.
  • Join the People’s Campaign for the Constitution and start organizing in your community.
  • Write letters to the editor. Gather some friends to write letters together and send them to every local newspaper. See our advice on getting published.
